Marvel's famous web slinger bounces back for yet another action-packed adventure in Spider-Man. Shattered Dimensions. With the developer being Beenox, the formula has been changed around a bit, which though refreshing is a slightly underwhelming experience.
The story revolves around the accidental destruction of the Tablet of Order and Chaos, a mystical artifact wtth magical power, during a battle between Spider-Man and Mysteno. Through a twist of fate, the Tablet's shattered pieces make their way into the hands of various villains across the different Marvel universe realities, causing problems across the multiple dimensions - and it's now up to each world's Spider-Man to restore the balance. Although comic scribe, Dan Slott penned down the story, it falls way short of engaging the player within the game world. The best you will get out of the experience are a few genuinely witty one-lmers before the plot wears thin.

Taking on a linear approach as opposed to most games in the series, Shattered Dimensions' main focus is placing the player in four different alternate realities - each with its own unique game style and mechanics. There is the Amazing universe, which plays like the games we are accustomed to, the Ultimate universe where Spider-Man dons a Symbiote costume to destroy enemies, the Spider-Man 2099 dimension with a more futuristic focus and delightful free-falling sections, and the 1933 Noir universe that has Spider-Man sneaking in the shadows and taking on enemies Batman-style. The change of pace is pretty favourable and brings the game a certain degree of quality. Combat is easy to get used to and works well, though a troublesome camera is irritating at times. The game's trump card is the Web of Destiny challenge available at each level, which provides a deep level of replayability by allowing players to defeat enemies, find collectibles and beat timed objectives in order to level-up with experience points These can then be spent to unlock health upgrades, extended combos, alternate costumes and other goodies.
Visually, the game environments are distinct from one another, with eel-shaded, neon-tinted and black-and-white areas punctuating the aesthetics. While it isn't anything groundbreaking, each level looks comfortable and feels just right. The voice-acting is quite good, with veteran actors, such as Neil Patrick Harris, reprising their roles as the webslinger's many incarnations. The familiar voices all sound well, and help players bond with the Spider-Man they control.
The multiple-worlds concept that Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions portrays works to a certain degree, though not the way you would expect it to. Weak storyline and technical flaws aside, the title makes for a good playthrough with some good concepts, entertaining gameplay and bonus content. If you're a die-hard fan of the superhero, be sure to websling your way to this one.

India is threatening to ban Blackberry!

According to multiple reports, last month, India threatened Research in Motion (RIM), the maker of the BlackBerry smartphones, to address its security concerns or face having its services suspended.

India has asked for encrypted BlackBerry communications to be made easily available to its intelligence and law enforcement agencies, saying that the services could be used by militant groups to carry out attacks. The ministry also said that mobile phone operators would be obliged by law to shut its corporate e-mail and messaging services if RIM fails to meet the demands.

Officials said that RIM proposed tracking e-mails without sharing encryption details, but that was not enough. The demands followed RIM's deal with Saudi Arabia, which allowed government access to its encrypted data. But while Saudi Arabia only targeted the instant messaging service [read related story on page 58], India sought access to both e-mail and messenger.

Following issues with BlackBerry, many reports suggested that India was considering requesting Google Inc, Skype Inc and other online service providers to allow the country's law enforcement agencies access to private communications on their networks.

YouTube's parent company Google has announced on its blog that automatic captions are to begin to roll out across the site. The machine-generated captions will initially be generated in english. At first they will only be found on 13 channels. These include national Geographic, Columbia, as well as most Google and YouTube channels. Global crisis affecting IT spending: Microsoft CEO

YouTube launched channel for citizen journalism

Youtube has launched Youtube Direct, a dedicated channel for citizen journalism, in an attempt to better connect news organizations with user generated content.
The channel went live last month and has been used by media companies such as The Hufflington Post and the The washington Post.
On the official youtube blog, the video site's news and politics editor, Steve Grove, said:"As youtube has become a global platform for sharing the news, media organizations have been looking for a good way to connect directly with citizen reporters on our site so they can broadcast this footage and bring it to a larger audience.
"That's why we created YouTube Direct, a new tool that allows media organizations to request, review and rebroadcast YouTube clips directly from YouTube users."
The channel is built from YouTube's APIs and is an Open source application which lets media organizations "enable customized versions of youtube's upload platform on their own websites".
Users can upload videos directly into this application, which also enables the hosting organization to easily review video submissions and select the best ones to broadcast on-air and on their websites.
Grove said that youtube Direct was also aimed at businesses to try and find promotional videos and not-for-profit organizations to ask for user-generated political adverts.

More than 30,000 e-mail accounts compromised

Tens of thousands of Web-based e-mail accounts were compromised earlier last month after their passwords were stolen. Initially, it was feared that 10,000 e-mail accounts were at risk but now that number has increased to at least 30,000 e-mail accounts.
Gmail, Hotmail, AOL and Yahoo! are among the providers that have been affected. Security experts at Ritz Security say that the problem arose not because the websites concerned had weak security, but because users responded to phishing e-mails. Phishing is when a fake e-mail is sent pretending to be from an official site, requesting details, such as a password and username.
Security experts believe that in some cases passwords may have been stolen, by using a technique called key-logging. This is when malware is installed on a computer and key strokes are recorded.
Infected accounts are being sent personalised e-mails from shopping sites that are fake and Web-based e-mail users are advised to change their passwords frequently, not to use the same password for various sites, and to choose a secure password.

INTEL hit with record anti-trust fine

The European Commision fined Intel corp a record 1.06 billion euros(1.45 billion dollars) last month and ordered it to halt illegal rebates and other practices used to squeeze out rival AMD.
"given that intel has harmed millions of european consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for five years, the size of the fine should come as no surprise ," European Union Competition Commisioner Neelie Kroes told a news briefing.
the Eu executive said Intel paid computer makers to postpone or cancel plans to launch products that used AMD chips, paid illegal, secret rebates so computer manufacturers would use mostly or entirely Intel chips and paid a major retailer to stock only computers with its chips.
It ordered Intel to cease the illegal practices immediately to the extent that they are still ongoing. Intel may continue to offer rebates, so long as they are legal, the Commision said.
The EU antitrust fine is the biggest imposed on an individual company, exceeding an 896 million euro penalty last year against glass maker Saint-Gobain for price fixing, and a 497 million euro fine in 2004 on Microsoft for abuse of dominance.
Intel President and CEO PAul Otellini saidthe company plans to appeal at Europe's Court of First Instance.

Microsoft Windows 7 available in October

Microsoft's new-generation personal computer operating system, Windows 7, is expected to be available in October the software giant announced last month.
Microsoft had previously announced that Windows 7, which replaces the much maligned Vista, would be available to customers in time for the holiday shopping season and the October release date is ahead of expectations.
Windows operating systems are used in about 90 percent computers, according to industry figures.
Microsoft released a nearly final version of Window 7 known as Windows 7.
Vista complaints included that it was not compatible with some software designed for the previous-generation Windows XP OS and that it was too much for smaller capacity "netbooks" or older computers to handle.

Broadband gains traction despite economic crisis

More people worldwide are subscribing to high-speed internet connections, despite the economic downturn, with China and other Asian countries among the growth leaders. This was indicated in a study released at the CommunicAsia 2009 trade fair in Singapore last month.
The study showed that the number of broadband lines grew by 16.6 million globally in the last quarter alone to more than 429 million. It said broadband penetration in 20 countries grew by 10 percent or more in the first quarter from the previous three months, with the biggest rise of 13.4 percent coming from India.

The improvements were largely down to greater access-the availability of technology and infrastructure.
